A Formal Psycholinguistics Model Of Sentence Comprehension

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper outlines a psychologically constrained theory of sentence comprehension The most prominent features of the theory are that: (1) syntactic structure is discarded clause by clause (where the traditional notion of clause is modified in certain r e s p e c t s so as to conform t o short term memory requirements); (2) the syntactic and semantic processor work in parallel. The semantic analysis proceeds from the preliminary semantic representation (PSR) via the intermediate SR (ISR) to the final SR (FSR), making crucial use O X an encyclopedia which codes semantic knowledge. The three stages of the semantic analysis are discussed. At every stage, the semantic representations are in terms of a modified p r e d i c a t e c a ~ c u l u s notation.

A noisy-channel model of rational human sentence comprehension under uncertain input

Language comprehension, as with all other cases of the extraction of meaningful structure from perceptual input, takes places under noisy conditions. If human language comprehension is a rational process in the sense of making use of all available information sources, then we might expect uncertainty at the level of word-level input to affect sentence-level comprehension. However, nearly all co...

Disfluencies and human language comprehension.

Spoken language contains disfluencies, which include editing terms such as uh and um as well as repeats and corrections. In less than ten years the question of how disfluencies are handled by the human sentence comprehension system has gone from virtually ignored to a topic of major interest in computational linguistics and psycholinguistics. We discuss relevant empirical findings and describe ...

The P-chain: relating sentence production and its disorders to comprehension and acquisition.

This article introduces the P-chain, an emerging framework for theory in psycholinguistics that unifies research on comprehension, production and acquisition. The framework proposes that language processing involves incremental prediction, which is carried out by the production system. Prediction necessarily leads to prediction error, which drives learning, including both adaptive adjustment to...

Along with this integrated overview, new hemispherespecific processing evidence concerning context and lexical processing is presented. The evidence is take...
